Occupation Road Winter Project

This wall space was donated by the CHS Group a local housing association.

As well as our art the association wanted to put there own signage on the builders site hoardings. So did Hill the builders. Its not a big site so that meant we didn't have a lot of room to work with. Just 4, 4ft x 8ft boards.

Not that that bothered us. After we helped the builders shift the boards to our studio we got to relax in the warm with some good tunes on the stereo wile we painted. A luxury in late December. When we finished the boards were fixed on top of the existing hoardings. A nice little donation to end the year.

The Wall Donation project works by allowing land owners to simply and safely donate exterior wall spaces in the city to artists so they can show of there skill in the public arena. The aim of the project is to generate a legal, public platform for urban artists to express themselves and in doing so show how graffiti and street art can be used to improve public areas and help to build community’s.

Halloween 2011

In a freezing cold October afternoon we decide to give our Bike Smut graffiti production from a few weeks back a Halloween make-over.

We kept as much of the original work as we could just giving it a new spooky vibe but artist Boe’s clockwork animals are all new and they really make this wall.

"At the end of July I got in touch with Blight Society as I was interested in having my car bonnet sprayed. I was speaking to Jon via e-mail who seemed very entheusiastic about the idea and was very helpful. We talked about the sort of design I was interested in and he put me in contact with an artist called Jad. Jad was also very entheusiastic about the idea, and after a week or two of discussion I took my car to his house. Speaking with him in person he is a really nice dude. I dropped my car off on the Friday night, and by Monday night it was ready for me to pick up. I am really impressed with the work he did, I think it looks great. The car is a real head turner and people always comment on the work he did. I am considering taking the car back to him to have some more work done and would highly recommend the guys at Blight Society to do any work whether it be on a car, wall or whatever. Brunswick Nursery Workshop

This whole project turned out to be a blast. All the children where a joy to work with and really got into the a activity and the parents loved the end result too.

I was sceptical when we were first approached by Brunswick Nursery to create a workshop to teach a group of 30 of there 3-4 year-olds. This was new ground for blight society and the specification that went with the project was daunting.

The end result of the workshop was to be a full colour mural in the nursery garden. It had to be as much of the children's own work as possible and be finished to a very high standard. We also had to use non toxic materials safe for the under 6’s instead of our usual spray paints

In the end we settled on the idea of giving the students an outline to work to and then to let the students use poster paints with rollers, brushes and sponges to add the colour and texture into the piece.

We pretty much let the children loose with the paint but kept a tight control on the set of colour each group had access to reduce the chanse of the paints being mixed into a brown mess. it worked and all the work was bright and colourful. Once the children had finished a blight society artist added final touches to the wall in spray paint. The whole wall was then lacquered to seal in the poster paint against the weather.

Chesterton School Workshop

Graffiti art Workshop with Chesterton Community College Cambridge. Painted on the far wall of the Art Block. Year 9 art students entered a competition to design the mural and the winners pieces were amalgamated into a final design.

The lucky winners also got the chance to learn some spray paint techniques form a Blight Society artist, so they could help bring their own work full size.

Pro-AM Fight Centre All-Nighter

Something a bit different this time. Our first inside wall donation in the gym of the pro AM fight centre near new street in Cambridge. The centre trains mix marshal arts and cage fighters as well as being a space to practice circus skills.

In order to fit our painting time around the gyms 8am to 8pm opening hours we worked through the night with allot of the artists coming straight from other painting projects on the same day.

ARU, one of the colleges local to the area kindly provided us with a film crew to document the painting day. At time of writing this film is still being edited but I will post it up on this blog as soon as its done.

Wall Donation Project

Thanks to the massive success of last years Newmarket Road Graffiti Jam, a live painting event that revived an old rundown where house wall in the centre of Cambridge, Blight Society Art with the blessing of Cambridge City council is now trialling a new scheme called “Wall Donation” based on the same idea of using urban, graffiti and street art to revive rundown areas.

The Wall Donation project works by allowing land owners to simply and easily donate exterior wall spaces in the city to artists so they can show of there skill in the public arena. The aim of the project is to generate a legal, public platform for urban artists to express themselves and in doing so show how graffiti and street art can be used to improve public areas and help to build community’s.

Red Cross Friends Day 2010

It’s an icey day in November and I find myself in a massive allotment space in Peterborough (UK) surrounded by spuds, cabbages and the best kept graffiti wall of fame I’ve seen an a long time. This is the Green Back Yard where gardeners and writers can work in harmony helped along by a mug of hot tea boiled on the home made wood burner.

Today this amazing space is also host to the Peterborough International Friendship event, Organised by the red cross as part of the 2010 international day of tolerance. The event aims to explore and celebrate diversity within the community through illustration, music and graffiti, and this year Blight Society is supplying the graffiti.

Young people from the Voyager school in Peterborough as well as staff and volunteers from the Austrian Red Cross Youth, got a chance to learn spray can techniques and learn some freehand letter structure as well as helping to create the multi colour background for the final “friends” graffiti piece painted to mark the event.

Was great to see the young people getting stuck in. painting there own names and practicing and working together to create something colourfull to brighten up the grey winter day.

Cambridge Seminars Wall

The Newmarket Road wall seems to have been an outstanding success. It’s been really good to get so many emails from people asking about future projects and wanting to know if we’ll come brighten up there area too.

Unfortunately painting outside is always going to be dependent on good weather and now that we’re heading into winter we haven’t been able to paint as many of these permission wall projects as we’d like. We did manage to squeeze one more in before the days got to short and rainy though.

Cambridge Seminars on Newmarket Road is a GCSE and A-level college for foreign students preparing for university. After seeing our work on Newmarket Road the Principal of the college kindly gave us permission to paint the wall of there car park. There was no restriction on what we could paint as long as it was suitable for the public but we were asked to include an education element to reflect what the college does.

The Newmarket Road Paint Jam

Blight Society’s latest Sub-Urban art event “Secret Jam” took place on the 18th of September 2010. The aim was to take a high profile run down wall in Cambridge and transform it into a massive open air gallery for the whole city to enjoy. This is the story of how it came about.

Back in early July I contacted a charity called CityLife Ltd that looked after a lot of buildings awaiting development.

One of CityLife’s big ideas was instead of letting all these buildings stand empty, unable to be rented out but still subject to tax, why not lease them to the community? Most small groups would not normally be able to afford space in a city as pricey as Cambridge but on a short lease where they only pay enough to cover the rates and tax large amounts of real estate would suddenly be open to them.

This idea paid off. Cambridge is now home to many new community programs that provide services we otherwise would lack. The insides of old industrial complexes have become charity offices, public bicycle workshops and sports facilities. But the outsides were still in the same state as they’d always been with no money for improving them.

…and that’s where we fit in!

We have access to scores of talented young artists who thrive on producing large scale public artworks, and what’s more they are hungry enough for a forum to display what they can do that they would dedicate thier own time and money to the project.

We applied for the outside wall space of one of CityLife's buildings on Newmarket Road. CityLife liked our proposal and got permission from the buildings owners (Eastern Gate Property Ltd) who were also keen to revive the area. All that was left to do was set a date for the project to begin.

It took 3 weeks of planning and consultation to organise all the artists and to come up with a suitable outline to curate the project around. We wanted to allow the artists their artistic freedom so they felt that they were being properly represented, but also limit the subject matter so as not to cause offence to the local residents. It was very important that we struck the right balance so everyone would be happy with the result.

"Our primary goal was to improve the public space with the artwork and in doing so help change public opinion of graffiti & street art for the better; something that’s a cornerstone of us as an organisation."

Below are some photos of what we’ve achieved so far. It’s the result of a month of our hard work and years of practice by the artists. I hope you like it.

New Print by Irony

Self Portrait by Irony,. From the full size image painted for the UpFest.10 show in Bristol. This print is made from a Hand drawn hand cut stencilled silk screen printed on a heavy died black paper with torn edges. The screen is pulled twice to create the subtle contrast in the skin tone in this image. The whole screen printing process was done with the involvement and/or supervision of the artist. I saw a beautiful canvas for sale in my local coffee shop a few months back and instantly fell in love. But as much as I tried I just couldn’t get my hands on it.

The guy at the counter didn’t seem to know anything about it and even after I bugged him enough that I got to see the shop manager all I could get was the artists email. I then send two or three messages and frustrated with the lack of response I gave up trying.

I guess I’ve been spoiled growing up in the boom of on-line shopping where everything you could want is available and one click away from being yours.

Blight Society Art has a few spots like that coffee shop. Artwork displayed on other people’s walls instead of in expensive gallery spaces. I wouldn’t like to think that there were people out there finding it hard to get hold of some of our art that they’d seen. I wanted to make getting hold of our work as easy as buying online.

What I needed was a “buy now” button for the real world.

“Quick Response Codes” or 2D bar codes are the best solution to this problem I’ve found so far.

These little squares are like visual hyper links you can click on by taking a photo of them with your phone. When you take a photo of the code on the artworks label it'll link you directly to the page on our web site where you can buy it. Easy as that.

Right now I’m adding these codes to all the labels on artwork that’s for sale in the Zebra Pub Cambridge (UK) as a trial.

If this pilot is successful I want to roll it out for all our artwork on public display.

The Sub Urban 3 Garden Party

Sub-Urban 3 was the best sub-urban event yet. Held in the garden of CB1, Cambridge's most lade back cafe. It had a great chilled out atmosphere the hole day with allot of familiar faces turning up to show there support..

The weather was beautiful all day despite a gloomy forecast, we couldn't have asked for better.

There was even some spontaneous music supplied by the cafe regulars.

We were spoilt by all the talented artists who came to paint. The cafe was transformed inside and out with loads of amazing art.

It was a good day to buy some paintings too, with most of the artwork in the makeshift gallery being sold on special prices just for this event. The overflowing recession-proof art table was also very popular making sure no one went home empty handed.

Due to the success of the event the owners of the venue have asked us to keep displaying the art until its sold and hopefully replace it with new work in the near future. All the work still on show will also be available from our website www.blightsociety.co.uk

Thank you to all of you who came down, especially those of you who traveled from miles away. You really made the event and it wouldn't have been the amazing day it was without you.

Sub-Urban 3 The Graffiti Garden Party

On 4th July the garden of the well known CB1 Cafe Cambridge(UK) will be decked out with wooden walls painted by some of the UKs young up-and-coming graffiti and street artists. This graffiti garden party complete with tea and cake will also include an exhibition of prints and canvas work by the artists involved.

Maya, the Cambridge stencil artist behind the Mill Road landmark depiction of the crucified Christ at St Phillips Church, will be joined by Snik, Site, Pahnl, Tom McDougall, Irony, Stagger, Mishmash, Opticnerve, eyesaw, Monky Arty Prints,Dell and Schlomo among others.

The party will be a one day event with free entry.

Opens 12 midday on the 4th July 2009 at CB1 Cafe, Mill Road, Cambridge, UK.

Pahn's Street Art Comic

"This film grew out of an on going film project with Maya. I wanted to film Maya putting up a stencil while conveying the dislocation and ethereal beauty of urban landscape at 2am. When I got the telecine back, it was so lovely I had to package it up as a short film. The Pete UM sound track seemed to naturally mate with the visuals.

Most of the film is one continuous shot on my Nizo 801 using the beautiful colour negative film stock Vision 200T and available light. The location was a very dark corner set far back from the road, so there wasn't very much light available at all, which is exactly what I wanted. I used a feature called AutomB that can only be found on Nizo cameras. It enables the camera to expose each frame of the cine-film for as long as is necessary to give a reasonable exposer. I had to lie very still on the cold dam ground for a long long time to get the shot. Afterwards I couldn't remember if Id set the shutter to B, luckily I had!" - Simon Mullen

A: We take grate care at Blight Society to make sure all the work we sell gets to you in perfect condition. Prints are posted in large gage tubes and canvases are packed in custom boxes. All items over £30 are posted “Royal Mail Sign for” This allows you to track your item until the moment it reaches your door.

Q: Do you offer postage insurance?
A: All items over £30 are posted “Royal Mail Sign for” witch comes with a £39 standard compensation payment for goods lost or damaged in transit. Further insurance can be arranged upon request. Any insurance will be supplied by the postage provider not Blight Society so any claims made on insurance are subject to the provider’s terms and conditions. Note: Once the delivery has been signed for it is no longer insured by the carrier and is the sole responsibility of the buyer. Please check all deliveries on arrival as you will be held liable for any damages after signing for the delivery.

Q: What is your returns policy?
A: You are entitled to a cooling-off period ending seven days after the goods have been received. Should you wish to cancel your purchase, you must notify us in writing (letter or email) during this time. Goods returned (unless received not as advertised) will be returned to us at your own cost with adequate insurance to cover the cost of the artwork against any loss or damage.Items registered and insured during transit, once delivered, are no longer insured by the carrier and are the sole responsibility of the buyer. Please check all deliveries on arrival as you will be held liable for any damage after signing for the delivery.

Q: Can I collect an item direct from you?
A: Yes. We are based in the city of Cambridge (UK) and you are more than welcome to come and collect your item in person. Any postage cost already charged will be refunded on the items collection. To organise collection please contact us via info@blightsociety.co.uk.

Q: What guarantee of authenticity will I get with my artwork?
A: At Blight Society we only sell work by our own affiliated artists. All the work we stock comes direct from the artists themselves. The majority is signed, dated and numbered and we keep records of all items sold so if authentication is required later we would be happy to provide it.

Q: How is my personal information protected?
A: Blight Society are committed to protecting your privacy. All your information is protected by the UK data protection act 1998. Any and all personal information collected by Blight Society when processing your order will remain with us exclusively.

Q: What is "One Pound Art"?
A: One Pound Art is exactly what it says on the tin. Real Art Sold for only £1. All the art sold in the One Pound Art section was donated to the site by the artists themselves. A small charge is required to pay for the postage of the item but all charges are representative of the genuine postage costs of that item. All work is sold as seen and all sales are final. New items will be added to the One Pound Art section as and when they arrive and are displayed on the site along with the date they will be available to buy. This is to give everyone a chance to see what we have on offer.

Q: I’m an artist and I would like to be part of the Blight Society how can I get involved?
A: We are always looking for new talented artists dedicated to their work who share our love of street art culture. You can apply by contacting us at submissions@blightsociety.co.uk. Please send us a brief email about yourself with some images of your work (images should be .jpg file 500MB or less).

Q: Can I organize a personal commission from one of your artists?
A: Yes. Some of our artists are open to commission work. If you have a specific artist whos work you want to commission we are more than happy to forward on your request to them. If you have a broader project in mind Blight Society can also try and match your Job to an appropriate artist. Blight Society will not give out the personal contact information on any artists and it is the artists themselves who are responsible for coordinating a commission after the inishal introduction. Prog is a busy member of the Cambridge graffiti scene, active on the streets for over 8 years and counting. His letter is influenced by likes of Diner, Zims, Skag... and all the other members of the London / East Anglian graffiti scene who have put the time in over the years.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO STREET ART Started off doing stencils through what I saw on punk record sleeves I guess. I was drawn to exploring the city, and leaving my mark. Similar to skateboarding, you spend time finding a spot and then you get your trick.

MEDIUM OF CHOICE Over the last few years I've been concentrating on printmaking, with silkscreening playing a big part in my work. But I get down to some drawing occasionally and I like to fuck about with a Xerox from time to time.

MAIN INFLUENCES/ INSPIRATION I draw influence from different aspects of DIY culture, from the- flyers of early eighties hardcore gigs, skateboard graphics from the likes of Jim Phillips to B-movie horror and Sci-Fi posters.

Opening this Friday, 20 March,6 pm, is House of the Wind Blown Clouds, a solo exhibition with new works by Sydney artist ApeSeven aka George Hambov.

His latest body of work is an exploration of the fictitious anti-hero "3 of 5" and the alchemy that occurs when exposed to ethereal power. Roots of the work lie in the modern adaptation of the mythological "Golem", a creature created by the rabbis of Prague to protect them from the Christians in 16th century Europe. George has a strong street art influence. This body of mixed media work incorporates elements of stencil, freehand, drawing and collage.

Exhibition runs from 20 - 29 March 2009.

As an art teacher, I do not discount any form of art, especially one that takes both skill and practice. Graffiti or Urban Art is something that many art students are drawn to, but few secondary art teachers have any background or training in. It is also a most misunderstood and frequently demonized art form that rarely makes its way into the classroom. As an art teacher, I hope to change this. This is why, when I contacted Blight Society about running a workshop at Chesterton Community College, I was overjoyed to find professional urban graffiti artists who would work with a secondary school.

The fantastic 5 hour workshop was split into 3 sessions, being able to plan the workshop together with the artist beforehand meant we could make the most of the time and make sure that all the students would learn effectively.

I was really pleased by the confidence and professionalism of the artist who worked with us, and he taught all the students a great deal in the short time that we had. Health and safety was always a priority, and made even easier as we were able to inexpensively hire quality equipment as part of the workshop. The students themselves not only really enjoyed the workshop, but produced some fantastic work in response to the patent and enthusiastic guidance of the artist who worked with us. The best bit of this endeavor is that the students learnt the skills in the workshop so well that they are now peer teaching them to other art students in the school. I also now have new skills which I can pass on and build into future lessons, so overall the workshop was well worth the money spent.

Hopefully we will be able to run further exciting and innovative workshops with these artists in the future as the impact and dimension it adds to the classroom experience is invaluable.

Cazimir in the fashionable Kings Street in Cambridge (UK) have kindly given us some wall space in their café to display a variety of our canvas work over the next month. Lasflo Okcsf the co-owner of the coffee house that opened 6 months ago said, “We’ve been trying to get different artists in every month to keep the place changing all the time. So there’s always something for people to see when there here, something a little bit different.” I asked Lasflo, what the reaction to the paintings has been so far? “People really like it.” he said. “They comment allot on the irony and hairboy paintings, I think its because the colours are really strong and your prices aren't so bad."

Over the last few months I been busy expanding www.blightsociety.co.uk, so you can see you more information on our artists and products. Below are some of the new features.

Access biographys on the artists in the "ART" section by clicking on the "Artists Biography" links under the gallery images.

Search and "order by" functions have been added to the "SHOP" pages so you can arrange work by artists, price and edition number as well as using keywords to narrow down products so you can always find just what you want.

When searching for something you can use all sorts of keywords like what size work your looking for (large, small, tiny...) or roughly how much you want to spend (£20, £2,000...) or even just your favorite colour and the search will only bring you items that fit that description. You can also arrange your results by artists, price and edition like you can in the main shop and you can narrow searches down by the type of product you want.

You can leave the search mode at anytime by clicking the "jump to" links in the top right of the page.

Once you've found something you like you can see extra item information by clicking the "more details" link under the normal description. Also more images have been added at the bottom of the page so you can now see the work from different angles or in more detail.

All the vital statistics are now on display along with a full description and for some items a few words by the artist themselves explaining the inspiration and philosophy behind the work.

All the updates were made thanks to the quality of the feedback I’ve received from all of you over the past six months. I hope you like the new features and keep helping us provide the best service for another six.

When we first booked a night club in Cambridge for a small street art show it was designed for a few illegal graffiti artists to display their work in a legitimate setting but "Sub-Urban" quickly became a massive showcase of local urban art talent. The second Sub-Urban is planned for mid 2007.
